Acupressure Points for Insomnia

While a lot of people found the movie Sleepless in Seattle enjoyable and entertaining, the actual experience of being sleepless is an idea that not everyone is so fond of. Insomnia, as it is more properly called, is an increasingly alarming concern among the adolescent and adults of today.

Generally, Insomnia is a known to be a condition where one experiences inability to sleep or chronic sleeplessness. It may also be described as a disturbance of the regular sleeping pattern.

The number of insomnia cures and insomnia treatment ranges from over the counter drugs, prescription drugs, herbs and therapy to name a few. But over the years, it was acknowledged that acupressure may help address the problems brought about by insomnia. Waking Up the Senses Acupressure is an ancient art that focuses on using pressure points to align the chakras and pave the way for the body's healing power to take effect.

Acupressure may be performed by partner or you may do it to yourself. However, a lot of people prefer a trained specialist to conduct the acupressure session as the specialist is trained and informed about the particular acupressure points that will be most helpful to one's condition.

Also, since insomnia is often a result of chaos in the body, acupressure treatments administered by a well – trained and educated practitioner will most likely provide optimal results. There are many acupressure points that are known to be effective in treating insomnia, most of them act as aid in relaxing the mind and body.

1. Neiguan, also known as Pericardium 6 is of them. Called the Inner Gate, it is the foremost point used in addressing insomnia. This is believed to relax the mind, unbind the chest and most importantly, calm the spirit. It can be found about three finger widths from the wrist, in the middle of the forearm.

2. Anmien, also referred to as Peaceful Sleep is an extra point that is designed to treat insomnia. It can be found behind the ear and at the base of the skull. It is directly under the mastoid process.

3. The Shimien, also an extra point, is known as Insomnia; simply because it is renowned for its effectiveness in treating the said problem. It is located at the bottom of the foot, in its softest area.

Relaxation is the Key It is very important to make sure that before the acupressure session is conducted, the patient is located in a comfortable room with comfortable pressure and is in a relaxed condition. The hands will be cleansed and warmed.

There will also be some breathing exercises necessary before the session begins, this is to prepare the person's body and to relax the mind as well. The breathing exercise may extend to the session itself, depending on how the person responds to the acupressure. But certainly, this breathing exercise will be repeated after the session is completed. In addition, acupressure may also be used in treating problems contributing to insomnia. Back pain or neck pain are very common examples.

How to get rid of Toothache in 15 minutes

Recently one of my acquaintances suffered from severe toothache and could not sleep in the night. In the morning she was thinking of going to dentist but due to some other complication it was not advisable for her to take strong painkiller or antibiotic. To buy her some time I decided to treat her with acupressure. I treated her with acupressure on certain point and within 15 minutes she had considerable relief. In fact I found that she did not talk about going to the dentist even for the next 3 days and there was no pain after that. This is not to say that you should not go to dentist, but at least you will get considerable pain relief and get proper sleep in the night till you get the appointment of the dentist.

For treating the patient you would need press the points mentioned below with the thumb for 2 to 3 minutes for each point. At the end of the treatment patient will thank you for the treatment.

  1. Point 1 : This is on the right foot. This point is located on the line starting from the intersection of second and third fingers and going till the middle of the ankle joint. From the intersection of the fingers it is located one inch above. Press this point for 3 minutes.

Timing of recurring Pain can provide clues to disease

Some time you may notice that you have similar symptoms for number of day during the same time of the day. For example there may be pain in the abdomen in the night between 10pm and 11pm. Another example could be aggravation of coughing during some period of the day. Usually there is no explanation in usual medical system as to why this happens during that particular time. But timing of some recurring pain or any other symptoms can provide clues to diseases which help in easier cheaper diagnosis and cure.

This clue lies in Biorhythm of the body. The Biorhythm constantly changes in the body which in turn changes the energy levels in each individual. During particular period it is on peak and then goes down for some days and again peaking in few days. One cycle of Biorhythm takes 23 days to complete. Some airlines still use Biorhythm to anticipate when the pilots would be there at the peak health so that they can fly with minimum risks.

Similarly there is a energy cycle for all the organs and it keeps on changing from high to low and then back to high in 24 hr cycles. The energy circulation between different organs of the body fluctuate as per the timing of the day. In acupuncture and acupressure theory, there are different meridians equivalent to energy channels and they correspond to 12 major organs. There is bioenergy flow between these organs which determines the activity level of organs corresponding to the meridians. Each organs has a peak energy time of 2 hours. Similarly after 12 hours of the peak time the energy will be lowest for that organ.

Here is the list of the organs and their bioenergy peak times.
  1. Liver - 1am to 3am

  2. Lungs - 3am to 5am

  3. Large Intestine - 5am to 7am

  4. Stomach - 7am to 9am

  5. Spleen - 9am to 11am

  6. Heart - 11am to 1pm

  7. Small Intestine - 1pm to 3pm

  8. Bladder - 3pm to 5pm

  9. Kidney - 5pm to 7pm

  10. Pericardium - 7pm to 9pm

  11. Triple Warmer (Three regions in the body in combination of various organs) - 9pm to 11pm

  12. Gall Bladder - 11pm to 1am

The above list can be used to understand which organ is likely to be causing the pain or discomfort. The energy level influences the functioning of the organs during a particular time of the day. This order was discovered by years of observing the times of day that the disorders of the various organs displayed their worst symptoms by various individuals.

For example, many of the worst asthma attacks take place during the early morning hours when Lungs have maximum flow of bioenergy. Similarly stomach pain due to gas can happen between 5 to 7 am. Gall Bladder pain can happen between 11pm to 1am. The best time to treat these cases is at a time as close to this time as possible.

Using this chart you can eliminate the unlikely diseases and concentrate on the like problems. One thing needs to be noted though that during certain condition, the biorhythm may be disturbed and the chart may not work perfectly. For example those with bad routines (very late sleeping or traveling to another timezone may upset this cycle and it take few days for the body to adjust back.

Acupressure Therapy - Strenghts and Weaknesses

Acupressure
Acupressure therapy is very effective and popular alternative healing mechanism. It is gaining more popularity by the day. There are various conditions in which Acupressure treatment is excellent way to get relief. There are various theories about how acupressure therapy works.

Commonly believed concept about this therapy is there are various pressure points appearing throughout the body which correspond to different organs of the body. But there are more than one theories on how pressing those points cure various diseases. For example according to one theory acupressure works on the principal of balancing energy flows in the energy channels. These channels are called meridians. Imbalances in the energy flow within the meridians causes diseases and pressing the points restores the energy balance in the organs related to the points. Many times there are multiple points related to an organ or we need to work on multiple points so that overall balance can be restored. As per another theory, toxins accumulated on the organs cause diseases and when points related to the organs are pressed, electrical impulses are generated which remove the toxins from the organs thus curing from the malady. Whatever may be the theory but the fact is somehow pressing the right points helps in cure and that is the most important part.

When points related to a particular You will feel some pain or tenderness at the point for the affected part. Amazing part of Acupressure theory is pressing the same point become the treatment for the disease.

In this article I would like to discuss the cases where acupressure is quite effective and cases where you should look for other therapies.

Conditions where Acupressure is Very Useful

  6. It does not have any side effects

  7. This treatment can be carried on with conventional drugs or therapy

  8. When there is tremendous pain in some part of the body, you may not be able to practice Yoga or physiotherapy, but acupressure treatment can continue

  9. If the practitioner is experienced, diagnosis can be made even without various scans or blood tests, which makes it very cheap.

Conditions where Acupressure is not too Effective

  1. Skin Diseases - There are no direct remedy for Skin diseases in acupressure.

Finger Massager - How to Use it

Usually acupressure is done with fingers and mainly the thumb. But there are various tools available which can be used for applying pressure. In this article I would like to explain how small Acupressure Roller can be used. This roller is very simple to use and handy. You can carry it easily to office or anywhere else. You should be able to find this roller in any shop where they keep acupressure related articles. Its cheap. I bought it for Rs 20 ($0.5) from a shop in India.

How to use the Acupressure roller
This roller is most useful for pressing the points on the sides of the fingers, front and back of the fingers and any other point where you will require pressure over a larger area. I use it regularly to role it on the sides of the fingers and on the front of the fingers. There are lots of nerve endings on the side of the fingers and on the finger webbing. Rolling on the side of the fingers is good for soothing the nerves. Each finger has various points which gets pressed when we use the roller. For example in an earlier article on acupressure for Frozen Shoulder treatment I had mentioned the points for this problem. Most of the points can be pressed with this roller. I have personally used it a lot and I feel that it reduces stress very fast.

This massager has two small rollers. One of the rollers has smooth surface while the other has teeth on them. The wheel with the rough surface is used for acupressure. The pressure can be increased or decreased by the pressure applied on the metal fork.

Rolling it twice or thrice a day on all the finger on the front and the sides is This roller is very useful for treating stiff neck, upper shoulder pain, headache, high blood pressure, eye problem, pituitary gland and stress.

Healing Links Between Yoga Asanas and Acupressure

I have exposure to both Acupressure and Yoga for a long time now. Like most people I was attracted to Yoga initially for its healing power, though I did not believe in it initially. If you look at the Yoga poses as an outsider it is difficulty to visualize how it can heal us. They also look easier to practice till you attempt the easiest one. But once I started to practice the beginners asanas from the great master BKS Iyengar's "Light On Yoga" book I realized how difficult even the easy looking asanas are for an average level fit person like me.

In the initial days I was hooked on to Yoga because of the relief it provided to me after a hard day at the office. All tiredness used to disappear, whereas weight training exercises makes you tired and you would need rest. Gradually I was able to experience the other aspects of Yoga, and its affect on the body and mind. Another point which provided boost to the experience was the fact that even with my relatively less experience I was able to assist people in their health problems. Since people knew that I was practicing Yoga and they had heard about its healing abilities, they approached me. I just used to read the relevant asanas (Poses) from the books and used to practice with them and guide them. They were healed of their problems. This left a great impact on me and encouraged me to pursue Yoga with more enthusiasm.

At around the same time I also started reading on Acupressure. It was quite interesting to learn that applying pressure on certain points of the palms, hands or body could help in curing diseases. Based on the learning, I applied Acupressure on myself and anybody willing to receive help. I immediately saw how useful it was. I cured lot of people from stiff neck problem and also helped people recover from lower back sprain and so on. I also successfully tried the treatment on convulsion points on my sons when they had febrile convulsion during high fever and it was really convincing.

How this thought was born?

I was just wondering if there could be some links between the healing powers and working of Yoga and Acupressure. This thought came to me while I was preparing to sleep in the night, and thinking about what could be the link although there may not be total match, but I saw quite a few definite links. I realized that during the practice of the asanas which heal certain diseases, often Acupressure points related to that disease are also pressed.

Most of the acupressure and reflexology points are located on Hands, feet, back of the neck and front of the body. As per the theory of Acupressure there are different energy meridians (or lines) in the body which passes through different areas of the body. At certain places in the body these meridians are near to the skin and pressing those points affect the organs and body parts associated with the meridian.

Examples where asanas and acupressure converge.

1. When we practice Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand Pose), pressure is applied on the back of the neck, throat region and the palms, as they support the body. Most of the points related to thyroid problems, cough and cold and eyes etc are located in the areas which are pressurized during the asanas. No wonder Sarvangasana is helpful in illness related to Thyroid, cough and cold, sore throat etc apart from many other diseases.
2. When we practice Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose), we use our palms to support ourselves. Cobra pose strengthens the back, and relieves back pain. There are certain points on the base of the thumb which are used in Acupressure for back pain, which are pressed during this pose.
3. In Janu Shirasana(Head on Knee Pose), which is good for Liver, the “Liver point” which is just below the ribs on the right hand side is also pressed.

There are many other examples which we can find. Though more research needs to be done on this. Though both are independent therapies, there is some evidence that there may be some common ground between these. One more thing to notice is Asanas complement the Acupressure treatment, but the reverse may not be true, but at the other hand Acupressure treatment can be taken by people who may be too ill to practice Yoga Asanas. To conclude, we can safely say that practicing Yoga asanas, may be benefiting us in more ways than we may be aware.

Acupressure and Home Remedy tips For Ear Pain

I have two small kids aged 18 months and 5 years and at least once a year they suffer from ear infections. Ear infections are very painful and common in small kids. Usually in case of ear infection the throat region also starts paining as these are internally connected organs.

The pain usually occurs in the night and you need to wait till next day till doctor can see the child. In that case it is always handy if we can apply some home remedies along with acupressure to control the pain. Here are two options which you have, one is base on Antibiotic property of Garlic and the other is based on Acupressure.

Home Remedy

This is a tried and tested treatment which I have got from my grand parents and parents and tried it a lot of times. Take a small bowl of mustart oil and 3-4 cloves of garlic. Boil them together till garlic turns black. Take care that it does not burn too much, but taking off the bowl from the stove as soon as garlic cloves start turning black. This will make sure that all the medicinal properties are mixed with the oil. Let the oil cool down. Now put 4-5 drops of the oil in the affected ear. Within around half an hour the pain will subside and in most probability you won't need to visit the doctor next day.

Acupressure Points

Press on the cheek bone in front of the middle of the ear. Press it for around 5 minutes and then repeat after two hours.

Please refer the point number 6 on reflexology chart for the point on the hand correspoinding to ear problems. This region is on the base of little and ring fingers and the region just below these fingers. Press the similar points in the feet. Make sure that in case the pain is on the right ear then you press the points more in the right hand and feet and similarly in case of pain in left ear.
