How to Practice Shankha Prakshalan

Shankha Prakshalan is a simple practice within yoga, which is practiced for detoxification. Although there are many yogic poses which can help in detoxification of the body, this technique is specifically designed for detoxification of the body. There are many benefits for those who practice shankha prakshalan, and some of those are mentioned in Benefits of Shankha Prakshalan.

Importance of Detoxification
When we think about detoxification, what usually comes to the mind is cleaning our bodies. However detoxification has a deeper meaning. At the superficial level, detoxification definitely means getting rid of the toxins from our bodies. Cleaning the body of these toxins helps in keeping the body healthy and helping us to lead a great life. When we detoxify using Shankha Prakshalan, it also cleans up the negative energies in form of hidden emotions in the muscles & nerves in our body. Apart from these this practice also helps clean the mind of the impurities of thoughts and makes it calm down.

If you are unable to understand how our emotions can be stored in the muscles, imagine how you always react the same way to the same impulse. For example if you do not like a person, you would feel and behave in a certain way when you see that person. If you are observant enough, you would be able to notice how you feel in the major muscles of the body or face and how this feel remains the same every time you see that person. Similarly when you like or love a person, that time also muscles and nerves react in a certain way though the feeling might be different.

As you can see the emotions are stored in our entire body; though it is a different matter whether we observe it or not. Some of these emotions are not good for us, and when we practice the cleansing techniques of yoga, our bodies are able to get rid of these emotional toxins also. One of the major reasons people practice yoga is when we use, move and control the muscles in a particular way when within a pose, it helps in cleansing of the emotional toxins from the muscles; and this is one of the reasons I love yoga.

Shanka Prakshalan

Shankha means counch (Sea Shell) in Sanskrit. The stomach resembles the Shankha and this practice washes the entire stomach and digestive system.

Preparation

Since the purpose is to clean the body, we should prepare little in advance. In the previous evening have Khichdi which is made from Moong seeds and Rice. It is easy to prepare. Take equal quantities or moong can be little more in proportion. Boil the moong and rice together adding salt and turmeric and one small tomato. Take some ghee and mix in the khidi. Have this in the night. Try to have it early in the evening so that the body has the time to digest and process the food and you are ready the next morning.

Shanka Prakshalan Practice
The practice consists of five easy poses practiced in sequence and consuming around two to three liters of water.

In the morning go through the morning cleaning routine including visit to toilet.

Now warm around 2 liters of water. You can add little salt and lemon juice.Drink two glasses of warm water and practice the following sequence -

1. Tadasana –Three times. Try to pull the body up as much as possible.
2. Triyak Tadasana - Three times on each side.
3. Kati Chakrasana – Three times on each side.
4. Triyak Bhujangasana – Three times on each side
5. Udarakarshana – Sitting on your haunches and try to twist your body to each side one by one. Twist three times on each side.

The above consists of one round. Practice for two rounds.

Now again have two glasses of warm water. If you feel the urge to go to toilet you should relieve yourself.

Repeat the above sequence - Practice two rounds, and again have two glasses of water. When you go to the toilet initially the feces will be more solid in nature, however with more rounds of practice and consuming more water, stool will become more watery and in the end you will just eliminate water. Stop at this time.

If you cannot do for so many times, and just go through 3 to 4 rounds of practice and water consumption. Even 3 to 4 rounds of practice will make you sweat a lot and also wash away most of the impurities from the body. When full round is practice it will wash away very old dirt and feces which are attached to the intestines also.

After the practice wipe your body with clean cloth and cover the whole body and lie down in a room away from wind and sun. After resting for half an hour to one hour, get up and take bath. Eat very light food like khichdi mixed with lot of ghee as this will grease your intestines.

This practice should ideally be done under the guidance of an expert, however if you want you can safely practice 3 to 4 round at home if you have reasonable health condition.

Benefits of Shankha Prakshalan
The benefits of this practice are already mentioned in the previous article. However some other benefits include
1. Radiance in the face. Eczema and other skin problems are cured. This happens since many skin problems originate due to the toxins in our bodies which are flushed out with stool and sweat.
2. Entire digestive system gets new life hence constipation and acidity problems vanish.
3. Many problems like Arthritis and migraine, sinus problems come under control.
4. Back muscles become more flexible and less prone to injury.
5. The person who practices this will become energetic and lose lethargy.
6. The mind becomes calmer.
7. You would become more conscious about the food and would be able to avoid foods which are bad for your health.

Practice the smaller version (3 to 4 rounds) once in 45 days. You can also practice the full sequence once to 3 to 4 months.

Practice of shankha prakshalana cleanses the entire body and keeps you healthy and beautiful. You become more aware of the way the body reacts to the food. You also gain the power to clean up the body and feel fresh again when you feel lethargic and drained out for many days.

Shankha Prakshalan is one of the cleansing techniques in yoga which cleanses the entire intestinal tract and detoxifies you completely. This is also quite easy to practice and can be done at home also, but it is important to practice the first time under the guidance of some knowledgeable person. Shankha Prakshalan is part of six yogic cleansing practices.

Effects of Shankha Prakshalan

In Shankha Prakshalan there are 5 poses which are practiced one after another. One cycle consists of the five poses
  1. Tadasana
  2. Triyak Tadasana
  3. Katichakrasana
  4. Triyak Bhujangasana
  5. Udarakarshana

Total of eight rounds or more can be practiced. Between each two rounds two glasses of slightly warm saline water is taken. In between if there is urge to go to toilet you should go and relieve yourself.

When you go to the toilet the first time the feces will be more more solid in nature and as you drink water and complete the entire practice only water would be expelled. I would be writing more in details about this process in the next post.

How to Detoxify using Water Therapy

Water therapy is one of the easiest and natural ways we can detoxify ourselves. It is a simple practice where in you would need to drink up a lot of water first thing in the morning and let the water work on detoxifying your body. Best part is water therapy is free and readily available.

In India it is told in all homes to drink a glass of water just after waking up in the morning. This makes the bowel movement easier and also replenishes water in the body. Drinking warm water acts like laxative. However in Water Therapy, amount of water consumed is more and the beneficial effects are also much than laxative effect when you just drink one glass of water. Apart from India water therapy is quite popular in Japan also where it is followed widely.

Steps to Practice Water Therapy

After getting up in the morning finish nature's call and take around 1.5 ltrs of water and pour in a glass and drink up the entire glass. Repeat again by taking the remaining water and again drink the water. The reason we need to divide the water in glasses is then it is easier to drink up the water. Initially it is difficult to drink this much of water, so you can start with around 1 ltr, and gradually increase it to around 1.5 ltrs. That's all to water therapy. Wish other therapies were also that easy :-)

Things to Note

  1. In case you are not able to drink so much water at a time then drink one glass and wait for 2-3 minutes before you drink the next glass. Also do not sip the water, and drink up the water fast.

  2. In the winters, slightly lukewarm water may be used.

  3. Avoid having food for around 30 minutes or so after drinking the water.

  4. Only precaution we need to take is to ensure that the water we are using is not contaminated.

How it works?
Around 75% of our body is made of water and it plays an extremely important role in all bodily functions. Most of the blood also constitutes of water which takes the nutrition and oxygen to all the cells in body and takes back the carbon dioxide from the cells.

All the bodily function like digestion and hormone regulation, chemical & enzymatic reactions require water. Water also plays an important role in maintaining the body temperature. Water therapy not only replenishes water in the body, but also cleanses the body and detoxifies it.

Among the other organs Liver and Kidneys work as the cleaning organs which take out the toxins from our body. Most of the toxins in the body are produced from the food which we intake. Body takes what ever is eaten in and then it is the job of the Liver to absorb the nutrients and put in the blood. Part of function of the Liver is to put the dead blood cells in the stool, that is why the faeces are brownish color. It also works on the fats in the food and converts to Fatty acids which are then converted into cholesterol and other forms like glucose to glycogen which can be stored in the cells for future use. It also converts ammonia into urea which is than pushed to the blood.

Kidneys flushes out water soluble toxins from the blood with the help of water. Kidney consists of two organs which are present on two sides of the stomach. All the blood passes through the Kidney filters which then removes the toxins from the blood and passes it to urine. More the water we consume, more is the amount of urine which is produced. The helps in flushing out more toxins.

1.5 liters of water is recommended as it almost fills up the stomach the water moves through the intestines and cleans it. Through the large intestine, some of the water gets absorbed into the blood stream and the rest reaches the rectum and colon and stool gets pushed out of the body.

The water in the blood slightly dilutes the blood which is good for the heart as it needs less force to pump the blood, and also reduces the blood pressure.

Will Drinking Equivalent Amount Of Water Spread throughout the Day Work?

Since the purpose of the Water therapy is to flush out the toxins together, we would need to drink the water together. All overnight waste from the body needs to be flushed out before we start the day. Spreading out the process over the day will not be able to perform the same function.

Benefits of Water Therapy
  1. It relieves and cures problem of constipation. Long term constipation leads to several problems including piles. Gastric problems and other digestive system problems like acidity are cured.

  2. Skin becomes healthy and attains glow. Wrinkles are delayed.

  3. You will have increased energy level because the internal organs start functioning properly

  4. Kidney stones are dissolved if they are small.

  5. Reduces blood pressure therefore good for Hypertension.

  6. Beneficial for the eyes.

  7. Obesity is reduced.

Vaman Dhouti - Yogic Cleansing Method

Vaman Dhouti or Kunjal Kriya is a yogic cleansing technique which cleans the upper digestive and respiratory system. Healthiness of the stomach and digestive system decides to a large extent our overall healthiness. Vaman Dhouti is one of the Shatkarmas (Six processes) along with Jal Neti which flushes out toxins from our body.

Kunjal means an elephant in Sanskrit. In this process one takes in water like an elephant and throws out quickly. In nature lot of animals like Dogs, Cats & Tigers induce vomitting by eating some grass whenever there is problem in their digestive system. This keeps them healthy as it helps them to throw out unhealthy food before it can absorbed in their body, especially during indigetion.

In Vaman Dhouti, one takes in luke warm water first thing in the morning and throws it out. This cleans the mucus layer in the stomach, cough and phelgm from the respratory organs and keeps these clean. Most of the diseases in Human beings start from the stomach and it is important therefore, to clean your stomach thoroughly from time to time. Dhauti is ideal for this.

I think more than the physical aspect it is the mental block which prevent people from being comfortable with Vaman Dhouti. Usually we relate vomitting with illness and uneasyness, and uncomfortable memories. But once you try out this technique once, you will see that it is quite easy and after trying out for two or three times you will be quite comfortable about this technique. I know quite a few people who regularly practice this once a week and don't suffer from any problems of cough formation and stomach diseases related to digetion.

How to do Vaman Dhouti.

Vaman Dhouti should be done on empty stomach. In the early morning, finish call of natural and prepare yourself mentally for this process if you are doing it for first time and try to relax yourself. The reason that it should be done in the morning with empty stomach is at that time secretion of digestive juice haven't started and once that starts, it will cause burning sensation in the food pipe as the acid from the stomach will be flushed out.

1. Take around 1 to 1.5 litres of water and heat it so that it becomes lukewarm. Mix half a teaspoon of salt to this water.
2. Drink this water as quickly as possible and as much as possible. You may drink in 3 to 4 attempts, but do not try to sip the water, rather try to gulp down the water. While drinking this water, because of the saltyness you will feel like throwing out. But try to take in as much as possible.
3. Now stand near a basin or in a open ground, bend around 90 degrees to your front while feet are quite close. Put the middle and the ring finger in your mouth and try to take inside the throat as much as possible. The water in the stomach will be belched out. This will clean the throat, food pipe and stomach.
4. Make sure that almost all the water is thrown out.
5. Keep repeating this process until all the water is thrown out of your stomach.
6. Lie in the Shavasana (Corpse Pose) for sometime.

Benefits

As mentioned earlier, Vam Dhouti cleans the upper digestive organs including stomach, food pipe (esophagus). During this process, due to reflex action mucus from lungs is also expelled and flushed out. Therefore while cleaning the lungs it is beneficial for asthamatic condition.

Patients suffering from low fever due to accumulated cough get relief from the fever.

Precautions

People with heart problems or high blood pressure, cancers and asthma should seek guidance from a qualified Yoga Therapist before learning this technique
