Vaman Dhouti
Vaman Dhouti or Kunjal Kriya is a yogic cleansing technique which cleans the upper digestive and respiratory system. Healthiness of the stomach and digestive system decides to a large extent our overall healthiness. Vaman Dhouti is one of the Shatkarmas (Six processes) along with Jal Neti which flushes out toxins from our body.
Kunjal means an elephant in Sanskrit. In this process one takes in water like an elephant and throws out quickly. In nature lot of animals like Dogs, Cats & Tigers induce vomitting by eating some grass whenever there is problem in their digestive system. This keeps them healthy as it helps them to throw out unhealthy food before it can absorbed in their body, especially during indigetion.
In Vaman Dhouti, one takes in luke warm water first thing in the morning and throws it out. This cleans the mucus layer in the stomach, cough and phelgm from the respratory organs and keeps these clean. Most of the diseases in Human beings start from the stomach and it is important therefore, to clean your stomach thoroughly from time to time. Dhauti is ideal for this.
I think more than the physical aspect it is the mental block which prevent people from being comfortable with Vaman Dhouti. Usually we relate vomitting with illness and uneasyness, and uncomfortable memories. But once you try out this technique once, you will see that it is quite easy and after trying out for two or three times you will be quite comfortable about this technique. I know quite a few people who regularly practice this once a week and don't suffer from any problems of cough formation and stomach diseases related to digetion.
How to do Vaman Dhouti.
Vaman Dhouti should be done on empty stomach. In the early morning, finish call of natural and prepare yourself mentally for this process if you are doing it for first time and try to relax yourself. The reason that it should be done in the morning with empty stomach is at that time secretion of digestive juice haven't started and once that starts, it will cause burning sensation in the food pipe as the acid from the stomach will be flushed out.
1. Take around 1 to 1.5 litres of water and heat it so that it becomes lukewarm. Mix half a teaspoon of salt to this water.
2. Drink this water as quickly as possible and as much as possible. You may drink in 3 to 4 attempts, but do not try to sip the water, rather try to gulp down the water. While drinking this water, because of the saltyness you will feel like throwing out. But try to take in as much as possible.
3. Now stand near a basin or in a open ground, bend around 90 degrees to your front while feet are quite close. Put the middle and the ring finger in your mouth and try to take inside the throat as much as possible. The water in the stomach will be belched out. This will clean the throat, food pipe and stomach.
4. Make sure that almost all the water is thrown out.
5. Keep repeating this process until all the water is thrown out of your stomach.
6. Lie in the Shavasana (Corpse Pose) for sometime.
Benefits
