Thyroid problems are difficult to deal with since they have deep effect on the lives of patients. Apart from Yoga which is very useful to treat thyroid disorders, diet also plays important role. Let us see what are the food that can be useful as thyroid diet, so as to reduce the effects of the disorders affecting this gland.
You may be aware that thyroid is a gland located near the neck region and plays important role in metabolism of body. Millions of people all over the world suffer from thyroid disorder and it leads to obesity apart from other problems.
Thyroid Nutrition
It is advisable to take improve the dietary habit as that can really improve the functioning of the vital organs. Thyroid diet should consist of food that are easy to digest, as much as possible in natural form, does not interfere in absorption of iodine. Iodine is required in very small quantities to help in secretion of thyroid hormone properly.
Here are some diet plans for Thyroid disorders.
Low-Glycemic Food
Glycemic index tells us how fast or slowly glucose will be released to blood when carbohydrates are digested. According to scientific studies, it is better have food with low glycemic index. Such food include fruits, pulses, egg milk and vegetables apart from the ones mentioned below.
Food with high glycemic index include pasta, baked potato, rice, white bread or sugar. In short try to reduce or avoid white food.
Note - If you are taking salad - adding little bit of Vinegar would reduce the Glycemic index and make it more suitable for you.
Foods to Avoid in Thyroid Disorders
There are some foods which can interfere or suppress with the iodine absorption in thyroid gland. These are known as Goitrogens. These kind of food should be avoided. Examples of goitrogens are -
Peanuts, Broccoli, Strawberry, Soybeans, Peaches, Sweet Potato, Spinach, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Brussels Sprouts, Coffee, Tea etc. Intake of such food should be reduced.
Other Tips
- Have food on time and in the evening try to have food at least three hours before going to bed.
- Have plenty of water, and in the morning start the day with having around 3 to 4 glasses of water.
- Exercise regularly.
