How to Get Migraine Relief With Pranayama and Yoga

Migraine is becoming more and more common now a days. It is an extremely painful condition and it become almost unbearable for the patient. I have seen many people who suffer from migraine not able to even lift their heads. For many hours they cannot do any work and just have to tolerate the pain.

Migraine can be caused by many reasons and each person may have different triggers. For some stress causes the onset of migraine while for others a particular food may be the trigger. It is good to observe the activities, condition or food which was taken before the migraine attack took place so that it in future those can be avoided, though it may not always be under our control. For example work related stress may not always be manageable.

However, it is possible to get relief from migraine with the help of yoga and pranayama techniques. Let us see how we can get migraine relief with the help of Yoga.

Pranayama

Pranayama are various breathing exercises in yoga. Purpose of Pranayama is to control the life force through controlling and regulating the breathing. When you practice pranayama, pure oxygen is supplied to the entire body and also to the brain region. The nerves in the head and the neck region are relaxed and removes diseases in the region including migraine attacks.
Here are few pranayama which can help you to get relief from migraine. If you practice them regularly you will almost guaranteed to get cured.

Deep Breathing
Sit straight and practice deep breathing for 3 minutes. Take slow and deep breath and then exhale slowly again deeply.

Kapalbhati Pranayama
This is rapid exhalation pranayama. Sit straight and just concentrate on breathing out. Inhalation will happen automatically. Practice this for 10 to 5 minutes.

Anulom Vilom
Anulom Vilom is alternative breathing pranayama. Here are the steps. Press the right nostril with right hand thumb and inhale slowly and deeply. Now press the left nostril with two middle fingers and exhale slowly. Once the exhalation is complete, again inhale from the right nostril. Now press the right nostril with thumb and again exhale from the left nostril. This is one round. Practice around 50 to 80 rounds slowly. This pranayama will provide immense relief from any diseases of the head region and nervous system.

Bharmari Pranayama
In this pranayama, put the thumbs in the two ears, cover the eyes with two middle fingers and place the index finger on the temple. Now inhale deeply. Exhale very slowly with humming sound through the throat instead of nose. Here is an article on Bramari Pranayama.

Yoga
Shoulder stand is one of the excellent poses. Another good pose is plough pose also called the Halasana. The upper body is supplied with oxygen and you get lot of relief in the diseases of the upper body.

Jal Neti

Acupressure

Other Tips


Avoid acidity and gastric problem. In case you feel acidic formation in the stomach, immediately perform Vaman Dhouti which will throw out the acid from your stomach and provide you relief. This should not be done if you have heart problems or suffering from high blood pressure or have undergone eye surgery.

Shashank Asana (Hare Pose) - Releiving Tension

Shashank Asana
Shashank Asana is an asana which is very beneficial for people who get angry easily and for reducing the agitation of the mind. This pose resembles the hare, hence its name. Staying longer in this pose make you introvert, slows down the breath and mind and makes you introvert.

How to Practice Shashank Asana?
  1. Sit in Vajrasana.

  2. Inhale and raise you hands slowly above your shoulder.

  3. Exhale and slowly bend forward and try to place the head on the floor and resting the hands from elbow onwards on the floor.

  4. Stay for 20 to 30 breath counts and then come back to original position slowly with exhalation. If practice for around 5 minutes and more it will be more beneficial. While practicing this pose just concentrate on the breathing.

  5. Repeat the pose once more.


Those who are unable to touch the head on the floor should use a pillow or something similar on which they can rest their head.

  1. Activates the Adrenal gland and leads to more adrenaline being secreted when done for a longer duration. If done before the asthma starts and done for more than 10 minutes you can avoid the Asthma attack.
